Aluna Vaqueira (Relani Prudhomme) of ABADA Capoeira (The Brazilian Association for the Support of the Art of Capoeira) began training Capoeira under Mestranda Marcia Cigarra in 1991 in San Francisco, California, until 1994, when she relocated to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to deepen her training with the founding members of ABADA Capoeira. After a two-year hiatus, while earning a Masters Degree in Social Work, Aluna Vaqueira began teaching the art of capoeira (and the related dance of Maculelê) in the North Country through lectures, performances, demonstrations, workshops, after-school programs, on-going college and community clubs and classes, service-learning projects, an intensive for-credit college course, and even group therapy.

Aluna Vaqueira’s mission is to spread the physical, mental, spiritual, and communal benefits of the art of Capoeira throughout the North Country.

“Capoeira é para homem, menino e mulher, só não aprende quem não quer.”
“Capoeira is for men, women and children; the only ones who don’t learn it are those who don’t wish to.”
- Mestre Pastinha
